Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I agree with the "many earths" theory and the Drake equation, in that, along with more exoplanets being found, there must be a high probability of there being other exobiological systems apart from us in the habitation zone around similar stars.

However, with such massive distances involved and our inadequate technology in the form of chemical, nuclear, or ion propulsion systems, even if we could achieve light-speed technology, distances are just too far. I think that our communication (if it ever happens) will have to stay remote for these reasons.
I'll be happy enough just to see man land back on the moon and then Mars in my lifetime!

SETI@Home is, for me, the best and most popular example of distributed/grid computing that makes use of otherwise redundant CPU cycles whilst BOINC projects actually help do real science across thousands of distributed platforms.
