Profile: Rev. Dr. Doc

Personal background
I am a product of growing up in the 60's and 70's and pretty much decided long ago that recreational drugs should be confined to organic compounds that are grown. Although I have not used such substances in the last forty-some-ott years or so, I have found enlightenment in the persuit of religious clairification. I have spent the last fifty some-ott-years or so trying to figure out the meaning of life, in the broadest sense of the term. Since I firmly believe that the great circle of science, religion, and philosopy are the answers to most questions I pose; therefore where one discipline fails in the answer, the other does answer, etc, etc. Theologically speaking, I am Evangelical Christian in faith, if one must put labels on such things.

I am not an ordained minister, however I use the title Reverend since I find myself ministering to just about everyone who comes along my way. Since I am a transit bus driver by profession, that is inclusive of a broad audience. I got hung with the title "Dr." during high school, partly because my grandfather was often called Doc, ergo, everybody saw it fitting, but mostly because I have a pretty good working knowledge of the pharmacopeia. As a lot of teen-agers did experimental/recreational drugs in the 70's, so did I, and unlike our former President, I am not too proud to admit that "I did inhale"; but the unlikely off-shoot of this experimentation was a spark of curiousity about the chemical nature of these things, and before you know it, I had managed to read the then current volume of the Physicians Desk Reference from cover to cover, and actually comprehend most of what it said. That is when I quit using experimental/recreational drugs. It didn't make any sense to me anymore, especially knowing what I learned. So I started driving busses for the school district practically right out of high-school, and pretty much stayed involved in public transportation ever since.

I have had other jobs in between the bus driving jobs, and the most notable was a stab at computer programing. Which brings me to SETI. Still repairing PC O/S on the side, Windows/Linux and I think that I am nuts for doing so.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I became interested in SETI when a computer guru friend of mine told me about distributed computing science and discussed the premise at legnth. I got onboard just about the time of incept of the propritory SETI program, prior to the implementation and migration the BOINC platform. I have always considered this kind of science important, so as to my reconing so far, it supports my opinions of divinity. When the subject of God and creation comes up from time to time, I have often discussed scientific endeavors in the support for the existance of God, according to the accepted canon of Scripture, and the historic confessions of the Christian faith. I know that this often sparks trial-by-fire debates or out right flames, and it is not my intent to open up a forum, just food for thought. I am merely making a statement, or an opinion, and from time to time my thoughts on this subject shift, as I ponder deeper into the meaning of life. What I say today, don't pin to me as my position is subject to change. I consider the disciplines of science, religion, and philosopy the great circle which answers a lot of questions about faith. Who we are, why are we here.

Consider this thought for a moment and reflect upon it:

Out of all of the infinite expanse of the ever expanding universe, of all of the billions upon billions of suns, mankind as we know it, lives on a planet which apears to be isolated from the rest of creation, asuming that there is more than us out there in the planatery expanse, capable of supporting life as we know it.

As far as we can tell with the science going on with SETI, there have been no confirmations of other intelligent life. I believe that God is a creator who has the wisdom to keep us separated far enough from all other creation. Historicaly we have problems of our own and we don't have the wisdom to interact with other beings in peaceful or amicable means. We can't even do that with each other most of the time, and for our time, in this demension of reality.

Are we doomed? Perhaps. Are we isolated? It seems that way so far as we know. Is there hope for the future? Definately! Are we too late to save ourselves from the folly of our distructive lifestyles? Maybe perhaps for this planet, but allas my friend, there is hope in the stars.

We must continue to evolve, albiet this common and accepted definition of evolution is a subject of great debate! What sparks your causal condition for the meaning of meaning?
