Personal background
I'm a 24 yr old astronomy graduate student at UMass Amherst. I have my undergraduate degree in physics and math from Alfred University.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) I do think other life exists, but it may be no more than microbes. If they are intelligent, I think their discovery will throw our world into chaos. As described in Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card), if the species is too different from us, it may impossible to communicate with them, and we may be unable to realize their actions are not intended to be hostile. If we are unable to communicate, we may have to treat them as hostile from self defense.
3) I think SETI@home is an important project, however there are many more important (and less "fringe") ones deserving of national funding. Therefore I am glad of this distributed format of data reduction and feel this is a much better use of national (and international resources).
