Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. Given the size of the universe and the probabilities involved, it is likely that life exists elsewhere, though in what form is debatable.
2. Yes humans should transmit a beacon. Sci Fi movies to the contrary, if there are other lifeforms it is unlikely a civilization advanced enough to respond to such a beacon would be inherently hostile.
3. Why do I run SETI@home? Honestly, I think it is unlikely that we will find any lifeforms with SETI, but the possibility is worth exploring. The peripheral information that is gained from the data is useful in itself. I also love and wholeheartly support the idea of using a network of volunteers to process data on thousands of computers in the interest of promoting science. Yay science! |
