Personal background
I'm Hans de Groot and living in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. My profession is teacher for civil engineering. My hobbies are bowling (ten-pin) also as a sport!, Formula 1 and music (singing in a close-harmony group and jazz-drummer). I'm married with Ria and we choosed to have no kids. My interest for the SETI project has begun by watching the movie "Contact" (Jodie Foster). After I had read an article about the possibility to help the SETI project, I didn't hesitate to download the program. There must be another lifeform in this universe!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes I'm convinced extraterrestrial life exists. Because humans at this moment are limited in technology, it will be at least several decades that humans discover it. It could be dangerous if that other lifeform is more advanced than were are and likes to conquer other worlds. The benefit could be that the other lifeform is more advanced in "humanity" and is science-based in the right meaning of that word.
2. As I can remember, NASA has already send a beacon (Pioneer project). The information we should send must be mathematical. That language is really universal. For example all figures (in Dutch Priemgetallen) like 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, and so on. The other civilisation should recognize that.
3. I run SETI@home because I like to help the project. The enormous amount of data cannot be analysed by one computer in a short time.
