Profile: Applied Technical Concepts

Personal background
The Basics
I'm a 54 year old Information Technology business owner (Applied Technical Concepts) living with my wife Mercy in Southern Califonia. Our dreams have begun to bear fruit, for together we own or are partners in 3 businesses, the newest being Health Rhythms Medi-Spas located in Riverside and Hemet, California. If our several businesses aren't keeping us busy, then our 5 children (Chrystal, Callista, Summer, Cassandra and Ian) and/or grandchildren (Jaylynne) are. Chrystal works for a major home builder; Callista (Physical Therapy major) and Summer (Theater Arts; Pyro-technics; engineering majors) both attend college and Callista also manages the Health Rhythms, Riverside office. Cassandra and Ian are both in high school.
Interests
Our hobbies include, waterfall chasing, visiting with friends, the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), Health Fair Trade Shows, planning (and sometime taking) vacations, cooking for fun and recreation, country music, and watching an eclectic mix of television serials (Stargate SG1 & Atlantis; House, Gilmore Girls, Medium, Studio 60, Boston Legal, Men in Trees, Grey's Anatomy, NOVA, Antique Road Show, Dancing with the Stars, 6 Degrees, Battlestar Galactia).
The Deep Seated Past
Both Mercy and I share an interest in things rooted in Science Fiction and Science Fact. Mercy has coordinated CONs (S.F. Conventions) in her younger days and maintains an interesting list of S.F. authors and personalities as acquaintances and friends. I enjoy technology as a tool to solve terrestrial problems both from the business and planetary points of view.
About Castillo Solaz
Castillo Solaz de Los Rios is the name of our extended household. Our family, both biological and extended, includes a large number of unique and talented individuals, many of which share our passion for Medieval re-creation in the SCA and the search for Extra Terrestrial Life. Therefore, the creation of the SETI@Home group "Castillo Solaz de Los Rios" is encouragement to our household members who run the SETI software to continue to do so and to be recognized for their contributions.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Life elsewhere in the universe?
Of course there is life elsewhere. The real question is "Will any two distinct collections of life ever overlap within the same existential, communications and intellectual domains? Imagine the joy and frustration of exploring the universe, just to find close calls with other civilizations (now extinct) or planetary crucibles where intelligent life tried and failed to take hold. We'll probably find it by accident. I cite any number existing earth historical references. And we'll make mistakes. However, interstellar distances can and should shelter us from the consequences of the missteps we'll make on our goal of joining an interstellar community.
Possible benefits and dangers?
The loss of innocence (or ignorance) is a two edge sword. I hope our theologians are ready to assist the lay persons with the transition. The scientific community looks to be ready. Due to the macroeconomic commitment required to explore space, those who do so "in person" may be very motivated to do so at a profit. I would like to believe that the concepts of ethics and the preservation of life are the primary universal properties of intelligent space faring species, however our current sampling only includes one race of beings. Perhaps the distances of space are a natural barrier that filters aggressive tendencies by way of an appreciation of the effort required to engage one another.
Send a beacon?
Yes, I don't want anyone running into us haphazardly. Information in it should include our SAT scores as a species! As a whole, we're not at 1600. I would share where we stand in regards to universal, if not local, scientific truths. Mathematics, chemistry and physics theorems, absolutely. Our DNA structure, might be giving away too much. Best to save this for a future conversation.
Why run SETI@Home?
It's for the species! If we're lucky, we'll trip over the news from another civilization. I'm going to the editorial section as soon as it's translated.
