Profile: Basil & Munchkin

Personal background
Originally born and raised in South Africa, I now reside in the United Kingdom, and have done so for the past 3 years. I am by profession a geologist, but have always been fascinated by space. Recently, I am been trying to understand Einsteins General Theory of Relativity - an interesting if not very difficult subject to grasp.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI? An interesting and worthwhile project (that in my opinion should be funded by the United Nations, why just one single nation?).

Transmitting Beacons? We have sending out signals for the past 50 years (television, radio etc) and this really is our beacon, although it cannot have reached very far. I wonder what ET life would think of those signals?

Would we ever be able to recognise an ET signal? I honestly do not think so, we assume that these signals are based on science that we understand - but this is not neccessarily the case. However, we should try, and that is the reason I use SETI - a chance is better than none.

The future of SETI? Travelling and settling on distant worlds is still a dream far in the future and this will never happen before the lifetimes of everyone reading this. Should we not use to the SETI concept to track and monitir potential earth encountering asteroids and comets? This I belive is a real threat and an extinction possibility for mankind - if you doubt this, remember the Schoemaker-Levy comets that collided with Jupiter? It could so easily have been us!
