Profile: Staffan Öhman

Personal background
I live in southern Finland and work for a large mobile phone company :)
I was born back in 1969, which looking at the numbers is starting to look like a
long time ago although it feels almost like yesterday. Time apparently also
flies when you are bored. Hobbies ? Nothing special, hunting et:s of course.
Unlike most of you I actually caught one, just look at the picture ;-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist? Sure it does, taking into account the size of
the known universe makes people who are convinced it doesn't exist anywhere but
here look quite silly in my eyes. When will we discover it ? Probably not in my
lifetime but one sure way of failing is not trying at all. I don't think we could
learn much from communicating with other civilizations because of the (probably)
large distance between them and us, ask something now and get the answer in a few
hundred years (if they happen to live quite near us :) And why would they want
to help such evil creatures as us anyway ? Still, it would be nice to know if we
have any neighbors within the reach of of our current telescopes...
The question whether we should transmit a beacon or not I find quite amusing.
We have been doing that since we invented radio and we can't get those signals
stopped even if we would like to.
I'd say running the seti client is quite a useful alternative to having the CPU
just sitting around twiddling it's thumbs, although I think we should put a lot
more effort into finding the next big rock that is going to hit us. Knowing that
intelligent life exists elsewhere is not of much use if it ceases to exist here.
