Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I love the SETI@home concept. Others, for better or for worse, have tried to copy it since, but SETI remains the most stable, most non-intrusive, and still remains add-free.

I think extraterrestrial life exists, I think humans will most likely not discover it until the world invests seriously into its research. Until such time as institutions like SETI obtain the funding they need, we'll be forced to limp along the best we can.

I think a beacon would be slightly pointless, as it's my perception it would likely be a needle in a haystack. We must rely on a few basic principles: 1) that our technology is detectable at all by other civlizations, 2) If we aren't as advanced as other civilizations, our technology may not be adequate to reach them. If they're significantly more advanced than we are, distance is a large factor to involve. For a civilization well versed in travel, travelling between galaxies, for example, may not be an issue. Using that example, a beacon that blips along slowly and eventually leaves the solar system (assuming it doesn't break down, impact something or lose power), may never reach anything intelligent at all.

Because we do not know how vast our universe is, it is impossible to comprehend how abundant the existance of life is on other planets, or in other systems. The only chance we really have to make contact with an extraterrestrial lifeform would be to advance our own exploration technology (IE the ISS, space-only travel, high-powered tranmitters from orbit, etc).

I run SETI@home in the continued attempt to help mankind discover extraterrestrial life. Although I believe our chances are small with the technology allowed to us with the minimal funding we have, I believe it is an endeavor well worth supporting.
