| Personal background |
Hi! I'm Psychosmurf and I'm 29 and I live in San Francisco, CA. I'm a SQA Engineer by trade and I've been in California for about five years. I love the city and most of the people, although 90% of them could use a driving lesson or two! ;)
I'm very active politically; although not under the name Psychosmurf! I'm also extremely excited about the changes regarding gay marriage that Mayor Newsom has initiated and am looking forward to the upcoming year and I'm looking forward to removing George Bush from office and I'll need all the help I can get. So get out ther and VOTE!
My computer is my main hobby and I love to play video games and collect DVDs (I have 120 and 650 in my collection respectively). My cats take up a lot of my time and so does my partner and my family. I generally love life and look forward to everyday with new hope. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
In the words of a very famous cartoonists and personal hero of mine Bill Waterson, "The one sure sign that there is intelligent life out there is that they haven't tried to contact us."
I do believe that life exists outside our world. I find it difficult to believe that on all the planets orbiting all the stars in all the galaxies in the whole universe that we are the only living, breathing, intelligent creatures.
I don't believe, however, that we will EVER 'discover' life on another world; at least not life that is intelligent as the life on this planet is intelligent. I believe this is true, not because we can't or will give up trying before we do, but because other life does not want us to 'find' them. Our society is not yet ready to be contacted by another intelligent race of life; our clinging to biblical myth, power, money, our whole mindset of the individual over the whole not to mention our prejudices and clear inability to keep from blowing each other up clearly demonstrates that. Why would a race of intelligent beings contact us? What would be gained by their offering anything to this barbaric race of beings? What would we gain from finding another race out there? I can't think of much as we'd probably wind up shooting them before they ever landed. I think we have a long way to go before we are even remotely ready for interstellar relations; shouldn't we try to get it right on this planet first? |
