Personal background
I'm 35 (but not for much longer), and I'm from Nottingham in the UK. My job was as a Civil Servant were I was last working in an IT capacity but I am on long term sick leave right now, hence the large amount of free computer time. My hobbies are many and varied, running from playing original music (I am a bass player) & recording others (part time recording engineer at a pro studio) to Ancient Egyptian History. I am a rabid Mac user as I have been an Apple fan since 1994, and will defend the platform from all-comers (so be warned ... LOL). I am also a fan of a great deal of Science Fiction, from books to TV Series (my personal favourite is Babylon 5).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I personally believe that not only does life exist elsewhere, but that the galaxy is positively teeming with life. I live in hope that SETI will find the first proof and that ultimately we will go and say "Hi!" on a long term deep space mission. The danger is that we might meet a race hell bent on it's own destruction, making any argument they can for a big war with massive and frightening weaponry ... no, wait ... that's us! The truth is I find it hard to believe anyone can be as cruel as we can! The possible benefits are innumerable, and the possible dangers? We could run straight into some race older and more powerful that objects to being pushed around by arrogant humans (most of whom think their religion means they can kill each other).

Should we send a beacon out? Damn straight we should ... as big and powerful a transmitter as possible. Let's let the other races know that we are here. The data we send should include cultural detail, linguistic files and even geographical and geological data. Whilst we're at it, please inform the universe that there are many of us that want to leave this backwater world in the middle of nowhere and join in with interstellar culture ... just kidding ... possibly ...

SETI at home is the greatest idea I have ever come across ... allowing the population of earth search for the evidence of intelligent life was a piece of revolutionary thinking. Now, can we turn that concept into a common system for everything that means this much to humanity?
