Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe EI exists, 100%. I also think finding it is possible, and we (humanity) will suceed, but it's not likely in my lifetime.
My reasoning for this view is the age of our solar system and the time it's taken for intelligent life (us?) to evolve to the point we are at today.
Assuming EI has evolved over a similar time frame, and given the number of similar systems in the universe, the time it takes for signals to travel vast distances, etc I believe it is highly probable we are separated from any ET by several millions of light years. Minimum. Therefore my un-educated guess is we are, at best, several hundred thousand years away from 'first contact'. Only a quantum leap in spacial transmission will overcome this i.e. faster than light transmission (and reception) of signals.
Despite my somewhat pessimistic view I have joined SETI to provide what little help I can with my 'cluncker' PC, and may one day join in many thousands of like-minded people being named as 'pioneers'. And, who knows? We may be lucky, I'll be proven wrong, and I might get to witness our first contact with ET.
