Personal background
Hi, I live in the UK on the south coast of the English Lake District. I program in C and C++ as well as some HTML, PHP, and other bits (*see endnote). I have also designed and built my own electronic devices. These have included:- a programmable switching clock, A/D-D/A converter, various audio amplifiers and power supplies, echo generator, true RS232 electronic data switch and signal regenerator using a fully surface mounted design, and (in the mists of history) a signal conditioner to make an audio tape recorder work properly as a storage device for a Commodore PET (These things made good industrial door stops). I have also worked with other computer systems other than MS/Intel based garbage and I increasingly use GNU/Linux but am still a newbie.
*Endnote (some thoughts on other programming languages I've used.)
I dislike Pascal. ISO Pascal is practically useless; TurboPascal not portable.
I like ADA, but can't afford a compiler, and a 1Mb+ exe just to say 'hello world' compiled on a nice Sun SPARC Station, is a bit overkill.
Finally I detest COBOL!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI.. A good idea; there's not enough intelligent life on this planet. Need some more worthy distributed programming projects for BOINC (stupid name) to do. How about attempting to unravel the data resulting from the Human Genome Project? Knowing where to begin with the data is probably nearly impossible though...
