Personal background
Hi,
I live in the suburb of The Gap which is just to the west of Brisbane, the capital city of the state of Queensland, Australia. The Gap is a leafy green valley nestled in the Taylor Range 8 kilometres from the center of Brisbane. My interests include fishing, collecting sci fi books, astronomical books, writing poetry, & recently making furniture & toys for my 4 grandchildren. I love beach (surf) fishing of a night when you can look up and see the magnificent kaleidoscope of stars in our galaxy. It has a habit of putting everything into its true perspective.
Sci fi books?, the good ones have an uncanny ability to predict technological advances which eventually will help to get us out there among the stars.Ever since I was a child back in the early 1950's I have been interested in the stars. I suppose it's man's innate curiosity to know what's out there, the never ending frontier that would sate anyone's curiosity.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
On our Earth we have political, cultural, & technological diversity from the hunter gatherer stage to our modern hi tech society. It would be terribly naive & arrogant of us to presume we are the be all to end all of evolution in this astounding universe.I don't think we have a hope of intercepting any modern E.T. transmission as it would be far more sophisticated then anything we have at present.I do feel we have an excellent chance of intercepting their early signals. We've been sending radio signals for years so it's a case of the gate's shut but the horse has bolted, so keep at it.We're only what, 30 odd light years out with our signals?,a drop in the cosmic ocean. Is E.T. friendly or inimical?,you would hope friendly as an inimical society would tend to tear itself apart.(read Earth history).A friendly society should tend to be cooperative, think of the enormous expenses of star travel, communications,& logistics. You've got to wonder if they would want anything to do with our species & its present belligerent attitude. It's a sad sick world when you can't go to work in New York or holiday in Bali without getting blown up. My main hope is that when we make contact with E.T. it will bring all the races of Earth together. To survive in the universe we will have to and it should put all our petty differences where they belong, buried forever.Seti is an entirely worthwhile project which should be funded by all the nations of our Earth for the good of humanity, & humanity's future.
