Personal background
I'm a twenty year old college student in the Central Florida area. I've had an avid interest in the Aerospace field since I joined the USAF Axiliary, the Civil Air Patrol, when I entered high school. I'm currently taking computer science and programming courses, and the idea of such a large distributed processing system like SETI@home intrigues me.

In a totally unrelated field I am a Classic Car nut (especially Camaros - I own two 1973's, one Rally Sport Type LT, and another Standard Type LT); I even work at the Late Great Chevrolet Association (www.lategreatchevy.com).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I, without a doubt, believe that exrtaterrestrial life exists. You want proof, you say? Uhh... Look! What's that over there?!? ::quietly sneaks off::

Seriously though, I'm not sure if we'll ever discover who else is out there; in the next few centuries or so, anyway. The Universe is an enormous place, and until we find a way to make a lightyear seem like a mile, its going to stay that way.

As far as the benefits and dangers of first contact go, all I think we need to do is look at our own history. What do we do when we find new and unknown lands? Columbus' discovery didn't seem so great to the Native American's a hundred years later, did it? Doesn't look so good for us to start now, does it? Well make it through though. It just depends on how "enlightened" other explorers are.

I do believe we should transmit a specific "here we are" signal, perhaps containing some information about our basic "physical design" (carbon-based bipeds?), general location in the universe, and mental processes (some basic mathematical proofs and such). I'm hoping they're not already reading too much into our TV and radio transmissions. Who knows... Maybe "Ishtar" was a hit in Andromeda? :)

I personally run SETI@home because it makes me feel like I'm part of something bigger; like I'm representing part of the human race in the search for an alien one. I this is a wonderful project, deserving of much more support than it currently receives simply because of the community it creates; all the people it has brought together for a signal purpose: To Know.
