Personal background
I am a cultural anthropologist and have been interested in the search for extraterrestrial intelligent life for a very long time now. I believe that once contact is made, an anthropologist should be included to assess the culture of the society contacted. Understanding their culture will allow us to better understand and communicate with those contacted. May I be the first to volunteer?
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
First of all, SETI@home is a brilliant idea. Of course I think life exists outside our realm of knowledge and searching for that life is essential and I'm excited to be able to be a part of the search. If I found myself to be completely alone in a desolate place, searching for others would be one of my most important goals. Being human means needing to be with other living creatures. Even those of us who seem to avoid human contact gravitate to some living thing such as a dog, a cat, etc.

In addition, discovering and communicating with other living beings helps us define who WE are. In my work and teaching it is in knowing the "other" that we know ourselves. Comparing and contrasting other human cultures has taught us our commonalities and gives us grounds for defining what it is to be human.
