Personal background
I am retired from the US Air Force and from the State of Idaho. I am 100 percent disabled so I spend much of my time at my computers, which I designed and built. I am learning to use 3 dimensional graphics; Bryce 5 and Poser 3 along with Paint shop Pro 6 and Vista Pro 4. Among my hobbies is astromomy, Photography, microbiology, woodshop and various handicrafts. Unfortunately due to my physical handicap I cant do woodwork anymore nor can I carry my telescopes in and out. Even If I could do so I cant stand on a ladder to use the eyepieces.
I have been married to the same woman for 30 years and I am owned by 9 cats and one dog,
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It would be monumentally arrogant of the human race to presume that we are unique and alone in this entre universe. One of my heros and all time role models was Carl Sagen. As a scientist Mr Sagen kept an open mind on the subject of extra terristrial life. I think we all should follow his example in that regard and believe nothing until the total and final evidence is in and fully assessed. SETI is a beginners small steps in that direction.
I cant begin to guess when, how, or even if, we discover other life forms.
Benefits of course include technolocical exchanges. For instance if we find an alien intelligence who doesnt have cell phones I will be glad to move there. LOL. Arts and music would also be of interest.
Dangers are many; a lack of common reference points in which to form a mutually acceptable bond. Our entire plantary religious foundations may be at grave risk. If an alien race had no concept of a greater power and believed that life has no higher meaning beyond simple accident of nature our own societies would be torn apart. For that reason alone it may be that our governments have already had contact and kept such contact secret.
Certainly we should reach out with a beacon... Sci Fi and horror movies are for entertainment, not for specie paranoia.
I run SETI@home becasue I belive in the project, and because I can run the program 24 hours a day with no impact on my operating resources. I would like to be able to run more than one search per computer though.
