Profile: Alastair McDonald

Personal background
I'm Scottish, born in Glasgow, and have worked as a Nurse, Teacher of the Alexander Technique and currently work as Software Developer. I live in Wales but have enjoyed living in Saudi Arabia, London and other areas of England.

I like a peaceful life with time to think and learn. For pastimes I like reading, films, gardening, walking, cooking, and keeping myself uptodate with current developments in software, hardware and programming.

I'm more interested in the future than the past which chimes nicely with the potential offered by SETI.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI is just great. I'm glad to keep my CPUs busy for an inspiring cause.

Given the number of galaxies and stars, I can't believe that no other life exists in the universe. The clincher is us!! We prove that life exists and given its variety and abundance (it seems that where life can exist it does), I'm sure other suns have planets similar to ours - the natural laws provide for it.

There will probably be primitive species who are reckless and destructive just as there will be others who have evolved beyond that. Hopefully only peaceable species can survive long journeys in space, otherwise we could be in trouble. With a bit of luck, if you possess technology that is powerful enough for inter-stellar travel and you have violent tendencies, you will destroy yourself before you can do harm to other defenceless species.

If someone can demonstrate that only peaceful species can survive inter-stellar travel then I am in favour of transmitting a beacon for others to find, otherwise I think we should keep quiet until we can defend ourselves should that be necessary.

I'd also like to hear some theories on the likelihood of the "eat or be eaten" sphere of existence extending into inter-stellar relationships. Having sounded a cautions note, I expect ET to be very friendly with much we can learn from. I look forward to the meeting and hope it is in my life time.
