Profile: The Flying Fossil

Personal background
Hi -

I am a former research scientist now working in IT - I am a web development consultant in
the Education Sector. Born in the UK and with Australian citizenship I am now
living in New Zealand. My main interest is athletics, & most of my personal
time goes into the Cool Running
community.

With my other personal time I've decided to study again and am doing a distance
learning postgrad dip course in Astronomy with Swinburne
University in Australia.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
On SETI I subscribe to the view that given the vastness of space and time it
would be absurd if extraterrestrial life did not exist - yes a 'terrible
waste of space' indeed.

However I am further of the opinion that life is likely to be so unlike 'us' that
we may well fail to recognise it. I am a big fan of S@H which I think is a
neat idea technically and as a social phenomenon. I have been a user since
day 1 (May 17 1999) and a regular visitor to alt.sci.seti. I have even had my
picture appear in Carolyn
Ehlen's 'clinic' !

The only problem I have with current seti initatives is that the assumptions
behind the projects seem to be too anthropomorphic - we might be looking in
the right place but in the wrong way. A book which made a big impact on me
as a S-F mad teenager was 'Solaris' by Stanislaw Lem - to me it carries a
very credible portrayal of ET life, I recommend it!
