Personal background
Well, I'm from Launceston, Tasmania, Australia - I'm a 20 year old guy and I'm currently studying engineering at the University of Tasmania. I enjoy programming (java), playing computer games, spending time with friends, chatting with friends from faraway places (actually on second thoughts, considering the goal of this project, not very far at all really) and playing indoor soccer. I am also a keen trumpet player and attempt to play as much as possible between study/assignments etc.

you can view my website at http://www.geocities.com/jezbit - which I attempt to keep as up-to-date as possible
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I personally find it highly unlikely for life not to have spawned elsewhere within our universe. Also, given the possibilities for panspermia the chance of us being completely alone in the universe is, I think, a fairly slim one.
I think that humans will most likely discover other life forms through some form of remote communication e.g. electromagnetic radio, which we are currently using, but I think this will be a short-lived medium given its inefficiency over large distances and velocities. I think any intelligent life forms will have become rid of their electromagnetic communications after around 300 years and replaced them with faster, more efficient mediums. If this is correct it makes it much less likely, even if they do exist, that we will find them by scanning the electromagnetic spectrum. I think that once we have discovered some more efficient mediums that it will become more likely that we will actually find some extra-terrestrial life.
Clearly there will be problems if the life that we find has millions of years of advancements on us as their perception of us could well be one of pity or intriguing bug i.e. poke it and see what it does. Also any technologies they have to offer would be likely unusable as we would simply have no idea of what makes them work
I reckon that the only time good could really come from such a discovery is when the other life-form is at a very similar level of development, in which case we may form an alliance in which information about technology and resources are shared between the two parties.
I think that beacons should be sent out containing some simple mathematical formulas and pulsating/counting signals, nothing that could be misinterpreted, just something to say we’re here, like a flare.
I began running seti cos I thought it was a pretty cool idea and since it doesn’t take any extra work it has stayed. I also find it strangely fulfilling to reach certain milestones and also use it as a guide to system performance.
