Personal background
Soon to be 32 y.o. IT "professional" who has picked up a passion for volunteerism (I fight bushfires when they occur...). Married with two sensational kidlets (both younger than 3). Not quite your standard Aussie here though! Sci-fi fan, read heaps of sci-fi fantasy, dont watch so much because mostly it turns into stupid plots really really quickly.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
What a question... Do I think ET exists? Yeah... there was this movie, see... seriously, I think there has been too much "unexplainable" stuff to write off the possibility of extra-terrestrial life as a whim or a fancy. Considering how apparently advanced the civilisation was 8,000 years ago, you have to wonder.
Should we be sending signals? Yeah, I think we should, though you always have the possibility of a "Starship Troopers" scenario (intelligent giant bugs - in case you have not seen the movie). Sort of the philosphy of "Be in it to win it" but also there is the good ol' aussie-ism of "'ave a go, ya mug!".
Why do I run SETI@home? Probably the volunteer in me. Plus the screensaver looks purty! Big Sci-fi fan, so the idea of being involved in helping to look for signals is a big attractant to me.
