Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that ET life simply must exist in one form or another in the galaxy due to the overwhelming statistical evidence which would almost make it a fact. I believe that humans will eventually discover life, or at least signals of life from other planets, but the question is when. It could be today, or it could be 100 years from now, best guesses estimate this figure in the next 30years, when processing power has increased 1 million fold.
Benefits would be increased knowledge, self-actualistaion for our species which would herald a new age of peace and prosperity for all citizens on our planet, not just the rich countries, in the recognition that we are not alone. The hazards could be of course the dreaded alien menace that is so well popularized in the media, and of course plagues and foreign bacteriological organisms which could kill much of the human race. It is depressing but it is facts.
Humans possibly should transmit a beacon, but we have to be very careful what information we put into it. Other alien civilizations are going to judge our species initially simply on the sole contents on what is in the beacon, or the information transmitted, we should be careful to emphasize the good points of our species, and of our history and culture. War or similar subjects is another matter of which debate is needed before including this type of information, as these alien species will inevitably most likely judge us on the sole information given.
