Personal background
Live in Texas and look at stars ... we are at our best when things are at their worst (paraphrase from Starman) AND we will become less arrogant and more real when we find (are found by) others

... if we are finally smart enough to learn something from them ...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. unless we are the first to spring to consciousness (unlikely and what a scary thought!), almost certainly other life exists ... the benefits largely would be 'humility' and 'knowledge' ... the dangers would accrue primarily in my opinion if we have something someone else wants ... we pose little or no threat now

2. yes, we should send a beacon ... little is gained from 'hiding' ... we should send a broad stream of our current knowledge and culture ... presumably we wouldn't be able to hide much from those who have the present capability of dropping by for a chat ...

3. run seti@home because my confounders need something to do ... hate to waste cpu cycles ... seriously, it's the best we can do right now and why the heqq not??? if there are others out there, we stand to learn greatly from them (whether they are peaceful or not) OR (less likely) there is much we might teach ... gives some incentive to learning how to get along here, doesn't it???
