Profile: LunchStealer

Personal background
I'm a 29 year old, long-haired, gangly, Libertarian geophysicist from South
Carolina who came to the strange barbarian land of Dallas, Texas to complete my
master's degree. I'm now employed my Marconi creating geographic data for
wireless network planning I'm also an erstwhile fencer (Epee' only, no foil
please), a backpacker and occasionally a rock climber. I've been known to
wargame, roleplay, listen to the works of the Progressive Rock masters and read
works of the Sci-fi masters, whence I learned There Ain't No Such Thing As A
Free Lunch
. I steal lunches.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Honestly, I do not expect to find anything. If we consider that the human
species has used the wheel for less than 10,000 years, and electricity for
barely 200, it seems that we've been around for the blink of an eye compared to
the estimated 15 billion year history of the universe. It seems likely that
intelligent races have existed, will exist, and possibly exist right now. But
the distances involved may be such that contact between races is practically
impossible in the brief window available. However, our current understanding is
very limited. It may be that life is more prevalent than we know (current
evidence seems to be indicating that life exists where we never thought
possible). Also we are just beginning to be able to detect planetary systems,
which means we will soon know much more about just how unique this oasis of life
may be. It is this window of doubt that makes me want to keep an ear out. A long
shot is still a shot, and even null results are results. Plus I hate wasted
cycles.
