Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Aliens exist. No doubt. There are other planets that have life. Now I bet you're wondering why I'm so sure. No - I haven't been abducted but I know someone who thinks he has. But that's nothing to do with it. The Universe is a big, biiiiig place. In fact, because it is expanding all the time, think of the number of stars there are. And remember that our Sun is just one of those at the centre of its own solar system. So there are also lots of planets even if not every star has planets. And if just one in a million of those planets has life on it, we have aliens. If you think about it the Universe is sooooooooo big that there must be life. Somewhere.
It would be a good idea for humans to broadcast a signal, why not? It may help aliens who are trying the same thing to find us. The information to put in it should be something boring and simple. There are too many format and language problems for it to be worth sending information. We don't know a thing about them.
I run SETI@home because it is something interesting for my computer to do when it's not doing much. When you run a simple program like Word, why not let SETI make use of the remaining processing power? And it gives me an excuse to leave my computer on a lot - to beat other people for units in the highly competitive Oops team (http://www.oopsonline.tk). SETI@home is good and is so big that some day, if there is something to be found, it will find it. All I would ask for from the people behind the computer program is maybe a better explaination of what it is doing, and built in work unit caching would be nice. Even though you can get that in third party software.
Finally, even if we do find aliens, they could be a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g. Anything. Anywhere. On other planets life may be liquid or gas or may change shape. If we get a visit from them, we should expect them to be what we least expected.
And that's about it. |
