Personal background
I'm Jan de Vries, from the Netherlands. Working in the IT-sector.
Originally I have a degree in advanced car-technical engineering (that's a long time since...), so I have a strong technical interest.
I also built a Cobra 427 replica as a hobby. Unfortunately that burned down having a strange accident with it, but I escaped with a few burns. I hope to be able to rebuild it someday.....

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm definitely very interested in extraterrestrial life. Don't know if they are out there of course, but it seems not more then logical to me that we are not alone. Who and what are we to be the only ones.......
I've been calculating for Seti before (1999-2002, so I like this project), but I've another mailaccount since then and I don't know it's password anymore.
It's a nice comparison, since that former calculating was performed on an AMD 200MHz with 64 Mb on Win98SE. I did 168 units on it in 1,2 etc. years of CPU time, about 63 hours a piece....
I now use an AMD Athlon 3200 with 1 GHz RAM on a Win XP platform. The first 2 packages took 23 hours a piece, but after changing a few things they now run in about 3:10 hours. If I look at the ranks (CPU), that should somehow even be possible to run quite faster. So the more packages are calculated, the better the average becomes again. Note: it finally settled down around 2:45.

Suggestions (or I must have missed those....)
- possibility to update your account here when changing mailaccounts, or
- the possibility to connect different mailaccounts. It's nice to see your contributions not "lost" (those former 168 units I also did, but now I start from blank again)
- possibility to add your PC characteristics somewhere. That's interesting to compare with what other machines perform. I can't find where I should put them, except into this textual format........
-Now that SETI Classic is gone :-(.. It would be nice if the new SETI via BOINC also would have more graphical data, results like what has been achieved, etc. It's a bit lame the way it is now (January 2006).
- And.... why are these slashes (\\) occurring when I use a single or double quote???? Do I have to use the [quote]...[\\quote]. But for words like >it's
