Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe it is very likely that extraterrestrial life exists, though I am less
sure about intelligent life out there. I think we may well discover life within
the solar system within the next few decades, on Mars or one of the outer
planets' moons. Anything beyond the solar system is unlikely to be discovered
within the next few centuries, unless there is intelligent life whose communications we might detect.
Discovering extraterrestrial life might help humans overcome their geocentrism.
Discovering extraterrestrial intelligence might help us transfer our innate
xenophobia away from each other. We might actually learn to get along.

I don't think we should transmit any kind of beacon at this time. We have no
positive indications of habitable planets outside the solar system.

I run SETI@home (at the office) because I think it's important.
