I have been interested in this search from the early days and am glad to be part of S.E.T.I. My desktop runs it continuously.
There is such a high probability that there is extraterrestial life, that it can be considered a certainty. We will most likely feel like we were slapped across the face with a wet fish when we do "discover" it. The dangers I feel will be those that we as humans will bring forth. Evolution has brought us this far, and we may become extinct, but who are we, inspite of our "grand ego", to say that that is not right.
As far as transmitting a beacon, we have been for many decades.
