Personal background
Iam 19 years old, currently doing a degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics at Newcastle university.
My computer has a 2GHz P4 processsor, with all the usual stuff that computers come equipped with.
I have had difficulties sending data back though my uni's fire wall so i dont often have my computer working though a data chunk.
My hobbies are listening to good music and talking to good people
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Well as a scientist in training I have many opinions about the world and the universe. The answer to the question, "are we alone in the universe", has many different answers. The answer which I prefer to believe is the YES answer, simply because probability almost guaranties the existence of alien life, but this is irrelevant. Say the probability of aliens living in the Andromenda Galaxy is 1 then so what? We cant communicate with them very easily and unless they have a "Quantum Slip Stream Drive" then I doubt we will ever come face to face with them, the distances are just too vast. This is however unfortunate as I would love to come face to face with an alien life form, that is unless they where the "Borg" or "species 8472", and this is another problem also.
As the continuously pour out information in to the universe we may accidentally attract the attention of a very nasty life form, to which we have no defence. Also there is the problem of intergalactic relations, as it is we have difficulty sorting out our own problems with religion or race, so god help us if we ever come face to face with a green life form who is a strong believer in their own "GOD", the threat of war would be great!
I ran the seti program because I thought I was helping in the search for intelligent alien life, I feel that the project is run very well, extremely well in fact. The web site is very helpful and informative, and even one of humans most basic drives was used to great effect, the drive to be the best, to have sent back more data units then anybody else. This was a great idea and has probably contributed a great deal in the success of the program, all though congratulating those people who have done less then 100 units would give people an incentive to start the program and continue sending data back.
