Profile: Jay Bryon

Personal background
I'm a Sr. Network Engineer at U.C. Berkeley, and am responsible for SETI@home's connectivity, along with the the campus network.

I personally was involved in getting S@H's ISP link up and running over a redundant topology, with various changes since the first roll out. I continue to watch over my piece of the puzzle.

I'm also an aerospace enthusiast, and my primary hobby has been model and high power rocketry. I regularly fly reasonably big rockets, as well as the little ones. If you look at my rocketry section of my website, there are some local resources for those interested in checking out a fantastic and safe hobby.

I'm using a variety of machines to crunch S@H work units, I've shifted them to BOINC, and am reasonably pleased with how that project is maturing.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it's utter hubris to think we're it. The evidence is better every day that there is life elsewhere. Exoplanets discovered are multiplying rapidly, even the hard to find ones like ours (well, in size if not composition).

The big question in my mind: Is there anybody thinking out there?

Humans are already transmitting, but thinking sometimes seems to be debatable...

I run SETI@home because I like participating in such an ambitious and well
executed program. Also I think it's criminally stupid to not even listen for
anything that could be out there.

I'd also like to see a distributed data collection mechanism, if not already existing, for those willing to set up a RF telescope in their back yard, perhaps with synthetic aperture functions for groups...
