Profile: The James

Personal background
I'm James Mostert (19), a travel junkie from The Netherlands. In the spring of 2003 I'll start a journey around the world, check out the full story on http://www.thejames.s5.com. I've been running SETI@home in the background of my home PC since January 2002, just for fun purposes and to do my bit in the quest of finding ET.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The universe is bloody humungous, so there's gotta to be a wide variety of life out there. Life in general is persistent and flexible, so once something comes forth out of a 'primordial soup' on a distant planet, life over there is bound to evolve further. Without a doubt there are intelligent life forms around as well, so it's just a matter of time before we find 'them' or vice versa. When we make contact, I hope it will in the first place make us realize what we're doing right now to ourselves, this planet, its inhabitants and our future as a species.

We should definitely send out signals into space. Isn't that what SETI is all about, assuming that other civilizations do that as well? But in fact we have been sending out radio and TV broadcastings for decades - I wonder what ET will think when they see some of our programs.. ;)

SETI@home is in my opinion one of the greatest projects in the history of mankind, a noble endeavour to answer the question that has been bugging us for centuries: are we alone? And it's great that the thriving power behind it is the common individual. I run the program for fun and because I believe it's for a good cause.
