Profile: Guttorm Grytoyr

Personal background
I am a 34 years old male from Norway, living in Drammen, just outside Oslo. Born in Vardo, a small town on a small island just off the north-eastern coast of Norway, 70.5 degrees northern latitude, 33 degrees eastern longitude (roughly). Overlooking the Russian northwestern coast.

I'm working as an analysis engineer on risers in FMC Kongsberg Subsea, a major supplier of subsea X-mas trees and control systems.

On my spare time I am pursuing my hobbies, which include photography, astronomy and astrophotography. But on a very modest scale, though. I don't have very expensive and fancy equipment, but I still enjoy watching the planets, the moon and the sun. I was very lucky with observing conditions during the Mercury passage, May 7th 2003. Clear blue skies, and a blazing sun. My 114 mm Newtonian with a 70 mm solar filter was more than sufficient for observing Mercury on the face of the sun. I am eagerly awaiting the Venus passage next year.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, I do believe extraterrestrial life exists. And I think we will discover it pretty soon, within 10 years from now. But I doubt it will be very awesome, nothing like E.T. or Alien. Probably virus, or something like that, and probably in the solar system. (Well, it has to be in the solar system if we are to discover it within 10 years. If it is found outside the solar system, I guess it will have discovered us, and not vice-versa. But there is the slim chance that SETI@Home will pick up a signal.)

Benefits of discovering ET-virus ? None, that I can see.

Benefits of discovering ET-civilizations ? Anything could be possible......

2. Yes, we should transmit a beacon. I don't think the information we send is that important. The important thing is that we send a signal, and that someone picks it up, and answers. That in itself would be a tremendous feat. However, if we picked up a signal from an alien civilization, what would we like to hear ? I would have liked to know what their stellar neighbourhood looks like, what their solar system looks like, and what their planetary system looks like. I.e. do they have a single star, or a binary star ? Do they have a moon ? Have they colonized their solar system ? What is their bodies chemical composition ? How are their genes transferred from generation to generation ? Do they have DNA ? Does their planet have oceans ? Are they aquatic beings, landdwellers like us, or maybe even avian ?

Basic stuff like that is what I would have transmitted.

3. I like participating in the search for extraterrestrial life. It would have been so fantastic if we could pick up an intelligent transmission.
