Profile: Don Davis, aka "gotthepoint"

Personal background
I consider myself to be a fairly typical person, from a modest middle-class background. My degree is in journalism, specifically news-editorial writing and mass communication, which is indicative of my insatiable curiosity with the world around me and the wonders of the universe.
A couple of my strong interests are anthropology and paleontology, with strong emphasis on Amerindian culture. That passion for knowledge about the "first Americans" has evolved into my searching for and collecting lithic materials fashioned by these early peoples. All my personal collecting are surface finds, usually on the Arkansas River gravel bars.
My interest in the heavens began when I was very young. I remember how excited I was to stand in my back yard to watch Sputnik streak by overhead, and later to see my own country's orbiting space vehicles in the night sky. I was in college when Neil Armstrong first set foot on the lunar surface. Having been raised in the "space age" makes donation of my computer as a SETI@Home resource as natural as voting on election day.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I believe, even without "hard" evidence, that extraterrestrial life exists. Whether it is in a form like us is another matter. Humans have probably already "discovered" extraterrestrial life exists, but to this day is still considered unconfirmed. That is why scientific data analysis from radio telescopes is so important. Our nearest neighboring solar system is, I believe, some 15 light years away, so there is little, if any, hope of anyone reading this ever traveling to another world where extraterrestrial life exists. The benefits of discovering life, in whatever form, in other parts of the universe are many. That life form, if human-like, may well be able to help us make quantum advances in our own space travel, science, and medicine. The danger of such a discovery is that we may be so very primitive to these other life forces, we may not be able to comprehend what ET might be able to offer us.
