Personal background |
I am a third year student at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada doing a degree in physics.
Have 4 PCs crunching units:
- athlon xp 1.587GHz (9.5x166) w/ 512MB of ram synched (2-3-3-6lat)of an EPoX 8RDA (nForce2)
- athlon Tbird(700) 1.01GHz (10x100) on Asus A7V.
- Dell Dimension p4c 2.8GHz (4x200FSB) with 512 of PC3200(ddr-400).
- an old K6-2 @500MHz, but it is weaker than a PII@233 due to assembly instructions being lacking.
I also run folding@home during SETI@home server outages.
Why is my unit average time so high? for a long time we only ran the graphical client on our intel PII@280MHz and average times were at 30 hours :-P ... |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
The universe is a awefully BIG place...
I have my doubts about whether or not we will detect another civilization which is technically sophisticated enough to be sending signals like a blackbody all over its sky. But as luck would have it, the numbers are on our side. The Drake Equation gives an estimate of this. After all the SETI@home project has only been operating for 3 years.
It would be awfully depressing if we were the only civilization in the universe. I believe that we are not alone in the universe, and that us not being alone does not conflict with religion.
