| Personal background |
Let's see, I'm in my early 30's working at that most thankless of jobs - computer/networking support and administration. In my (very) spare time, I like to do many and varied things.
I enjoy creating, so I do counted cross-stitch and sew dresses (as well as other pieces for my family). I love to read, and have a vast library: Doug Adams, MZB, Steven Brust, Tom Clancy, Robert Jordan, Patricia Kennealy (-Morrison), Melanie Rawn, Connie Willis, Roger Zelazny (that's just an overview). My husband and I garden fairly intensely, and we have the garden to prove it! My specialty are roses ... quite a challenge in Zone 4b/5a. While they usually do well, I have to keep convincing the aphids and beetles to STAY AWAY THANK YOU.
The photo here was taken at the summit of Cascade Mountain, one of the 46 High Peaks of the Adirondacks. It's a short climb (4.2 mi round trip) but you insert at the bottom of the ascent and it's steep and rocky. The view is fantastic! Especially in August! |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I run SETI because it's a neat idea and to me, illustrates the best of what the internet can be. (That wasn't meant to rhyme.)
Unfortunately, I don't think humans (in general, right now) are mentally or psychologically equipped to handle such a fundamental life-as-we-know-it changing experience by discovering ET life. Some are ready, willing and able; the vast majority are not. In a way, I think it's similar to the ethics questions permeating the medical field right now. Just because we CAN, SHOULD we? Where do we draw the line between X and Y? Difficult questions, certainly.
Should we advertise our presence here? As I've been told time and time again, if you're not afraid to ask the question, you better be prepared for the answer you receive. :-) |
