While I believe that there is extraterrestrial life, I do so without any imperical knowlege. Like the belief in God (in whatever form it may take), we search only because we do not have the answer.
My only proof that there is intelligent life out there is the fact that it hasn't decided to contact us :) (Not an original quote, but I don't know the author)
As for a transmittion beacon, or some such signal to indicate intelligent life on this planet, it's a moot point both in the fact that we are already transmitting to the cosmos through a wide spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, and the fact that we aren't sure ourselves if there is 'intelligent' life here.
I run it because it is my small contribution to the advance of science, and the power of the individual to aid in the quest for knowlege, no matter how small the effort or how little the understanding, we can all make a difference.
