Personal background
I'm a closet nerd from way back. Star Trek, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and anything technological usually captures my interest. I am fascinated with the big picture concept of the universe and the more I know, the more I realise what a tiny spec we humans are in the big picture. Like many closet (and non-closet) nerds, I am an engineer and still have the same interests I had when I was 12. The only difference is now that I have a lovely wife and two beautiful children. I am a firm believer in maturing, but never growing up.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am fascinated with the SETI@home concept because of the cooperative nature of the project. Harnessing the power of millions of PC's is a great utilization of available and cheap hardware. About SETI itself, however, I don't think we have a chance with our current program. We are looking for the microscopic needle in the Mt. Everest haystack. We are hoping to find an artificial transmission that: has enough power to be detected, that we will be looking at the right point in the galaxy to capture the transmission, that we are looking at the right frequency, and the fact the most likely anything we receive will be at least hundreds to thousands of years old. If I'm an alien, what's important enough to say to my other alien friends that can wait years and years with this primitive light speed radio wave transmission technology? That being said, I say transmit a beacon from earth anyway - by the time anyone gets the message, we will be long dead (let alone by the time they can do anything about it!)
I think ET life is out there, we just won't know about it until they decide the time.
So why do I participate: If I was right about everything, the world would be an awful place. Everything in life is a learning expereince and everthing we learn becomes a foundation for the next step. Who knows, maybe what we are doing today will help us make our own interstellar transmissions in the future.
