Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I have been running SETI@home for two and a half years. I think it's a brilliant idea and a fantastic way for people interested in SETI research to show their support.
While I conclude that it is very likely that extraterrestrial life exists, I must operate on the assumption that they do not until we find evidence to the contrary.
Before we transmit a 'beacon' of some sort for others to find, we should explore the possible consequences of such an action. We can't imagine the sorts of cultures that exist on other worlds, or how such a message might be received. I would like to think that any civilization which could respond to our message would be enlightened enough to be respectful of our lives and territory. Wishful thinking, however, doesn't make it so. While there is little doubt in my mind that we will someday encounter extraterrestial intelligences, I consider myself cautiously optimistic. |
