Profile: Tracey Oliphant

Personal background
I am an author of fantasy novels, with five published so far (under the name of Kate Jacoby), with many more to come. I currently live in Australia, but I've travelled all over the world - and indeed, travel is still one of my great loves. I'm a student of history, religion, science and art and yet, I find the infinite possibilites contained within the universe utterly intoxicating.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think the possibility of extraterrestrial life too great to ignore. On the other hand, I don't necessarily assume that life will be something sufficiently advanced to go sending out signals for us to find. Of course the opposite could also be true, that ET is so advanced that we would barely register and therefore, contact would be avoided.

My father believes that, even if we did contact other life, that there would be no point since the laws of physics will always prevent us from travelling faster than the speed of light. As a result, he thinks the search is a waste of time. I cannot seem to convince him that the search is about much more than spaceships and science fiction, ray-guns and bug-eyed monsters - although I'm willing to concede that it could be :-). However, the search goes much deeper than that. It touches on our desire to explore and understand, and perhaps to see whether we're alone or not. Perhaps the knowledge alone will be enough for us, or perhaps we will try to make the trip. At this point, we can't possibly say what will happen if and when contact is made. What is clear however, is that moment will change us profoundly and permanently.

I run Seti@home because I love the idea of being part of something this big, something that crosses the boundaries of politics, race, religion and ecconomics. Within this realm, none of that matters. What does matter is that we are united in a common goal, and that the success of one is the success of us all. I think our ability to deal with any discoveries we make will rely on us starting from such a strong foundation. And how could I ignore the heat-stopping possibility, that I might be one of those who processes a successful candidate?
