Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
About SETI: Space is very vast and Earth is just a miniscule dot in it. I like the "research" field and (since I can not contribute in the economical/financial way) helping with the crunching of data I feel that I am contributing in a small way n the progress of science. Working at UCSD where one of the largest Super Computers is located; I became aware of how much DATA is in need to be process and analyze in a daily basis, without mentioning the "wait on line" or the financial cost.
http://www.sdsc.edu/about/About.html
"SDSC was founded with a $170 million grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Supercomputer Centers program."

Therefore helping SETI / BOINC makes sense, by allowing the un-use power of our home computers, we are helping the field of sciences to achieve their goal.
