| Personal background |
| My wife and kids say I'm a computer geek, which I take as a compliment. I've been working with computers (hardware, software and networks) for over 15 years. I'm currently employed as a programmer. My only real hobby, other than computers, is collecting Star Trek cards, which I enjoy so much that I have turned it into a small side business and I sell sets, chase cards and boxes. Besides Star Trek I also love the show StarGate SG-1. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Does intelligent life exist on other planets? Yes! Will we ever find it? I'd say our odds are about 1 in a gazillion. And if we do find a signal and prove that other life does exist, I don't think we'll ever contact or be contacted by them because of the huge interstellar distances and time involved.
Why do I run SETI@home? Two reasons. One, if we aren't looking then obviously we don't have even the slightest odds of finding anything. Second, I believe in distributed processing. I had most my computers working on breaking the rc5-64bit key for the past two years (mainly because there was prize money involved) but now with that solved I've switched back to SETI. If a distributed process became available that would benefit mankind (like cancer research or global warming research) then I'd probably donate my unused CPU cycles to that instead. |
