Personal background
I hail from the town of Greenock, near Glasgow in Scotland. When I'm not surfing the information superhighway and the wonders of the web, I'm usually to be found, glass in hand, sorting out the ills of the world.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm 100% certain that there is life out in the universe. I'm not so certain that there is intelligent life there which would be so desperate for company that they are broadcasting the fact. If we ever do make "contact" I would think it would essentially be a cosmic accident, and may or may not be fruitful on both sides. A culture which can travel instellar space would probably consider us more to be gawped at than united with. Is it possible at all that the UFO phenomenon is nothing more than a souped up BBC making a nature documentary ergo Life on Earth?

With all that said, humanity should transmit a beacon of welcome / hullo / we know lots about fish and other creatures / what have you, any creatures who can get physically close enough to be a threat will certainly already know we are here, so there is no extra risk involved, though there may be some benefits in the farther reaches of space in the distant future.

I run SETI@home for a simple reason - I can, without it compromising my PC's efficiency. It costs me nothing in bandwidth charges and so therefore is a reasonable way of using the slack in my PC's performance ability. Before you ask, I also run the Intel medical programmes - so there is both curiousity and benevolence in my deeds.
