Profile: Chris Compton

Personal background
My name is Chris Compton and I was raised in the small town of Victoria, TX. When I was 12, I moved to Toronto, Ont. with my father and moved back to Victoria, TX when I was 19. I am now 26 and in my third year of marriage to my beautiful wife, who I have known since 1st grade, and we have the most adorable 4 year old daughter. I attend the University here trying to obtain a degree in Information Systems. I work for the school district as the PEIMS Coordinator, and maintain a database of our 15,000 students and 2000 staff members. When I'm not at work, school, at home playing with my daughter, or rubbing my wifes back, I am usually programming my latest Perl-MySQL-based Web idea. I enjoy playing my guitar, and doing the routine maintenance on our cars. Just recently, I found a group of guys that play street hockey, so lately, I have been re-living the glory of my high school hockey days.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that extraterrestrial life is exists. I hold true the the standard argument, that given all the trillions and trillions of stars and all the planets arround those stars, it is impossible for there not to be life outside of our planet. I believe that we will find life closer to home than we think. I think that there is the start of life on another planet, rather, another planet's moon in our own solar system. In answer to the second question, I don't believe that the human race is ready for the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life. I would be embarrassed to present ourselves to intelligent extraterrestrial life given our short comings. I do believe that we are growing and may soon be ready for such a discovery, and thats why I run SETI@home. I believe that projects like this, and many Open Source projects are the kind of communal efforts we need to find peace with ourselves. When we have done that, we will be ready.
