Profile: Christopher E. Smith

Personal background
I am an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the
University of New Mexico. My specialities include robotics, computer vision,
and medical imaging. I grew up in the state of Michigan (a Yooper!) and
attended Lake Superior State University, the University of Michigan, and
the University of Minnesota. I like to play golf and I am an avid hockey
fan. My webpage is http://www.eece.unm.edu/~chsmith and many of the people
I know from my days in industry get together for the Great Midwestern Trivia
Contest at Lawrence University in Appleton Wisconsin each January. Our team
webpage is at http://sunbird.eece.unm.edu/trivia.html
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home because I think that it is both an interesting parallel
computation experiment and an opportunity to make significant discoveries.
I honestly believe that there is other life in the universe. Consider our
planet; it has seen amazingly catastrophic events through which life has
persisted. I would think that if life were so unique in our vast universe,
that it would also be very fragile. Its pervasiveness on Earth leads me to
believe that it should be pervasive elsewhere. Until we have proof though,
this is simply speculation. SETI@home is our best possibility of discovering
that proof.
