Profile: Servius Valerius Corvinus

Personal background
After being left on the doorstep by gypsies (no, really, ask my friends - they all say I may act like my parents - scary a thought as that is - but don't look like the rest of my family), I spent my misbegotten youth wandering around in the tow of a Navy family. My latest arc - solo this time - took me from high school in Washington DC to college in Chicago, and thence to grad school in LA. Home, however, will always be Texas. Out here on the left coast in this liberal fascist state of California I study classics (no, not Milton and Shakespeare... think older, like Homer and Vergil) at UCLA, and am writing my Ph.D. thesis on Aristophanes. Give me a couple years and I'll be on to my next destination... wherever that may be.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I had heard about SETI@home at a couple points along the way, but never thought to join until (1) I got a DSL connection, and (2) upgraded to Mac OS X (go Mac!) and was looking for a screensaver. Now, over 100 results later, I'm pleased as punch to be part of this ongoing project. Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? Absolutely. To think otherwise, in my opinion, would be the height of human arrogance. In this vast and wonderful universe, do we really think we're the only life forms out here? How about intelligent life? Precious little here on Terra, but I certainly hope that we can find more out there... someday. I fear that day will not be soon - as I said, we are dealing with a huge playing field here - but then perhaps we're not ready yet. I'd like to think we could put aside our own petty differences, between races and creeds and countries, before we're faced with a form of life that forces us to be aware of how similar we all really are, when it comes right down to it. Yes, I'm one of those dreamers who hopes - and, on my more optimistic days, believes - that someday we will have a world government, true global cooperation, with liberty and justice and all that wonderful stuff for all. If - when - we achieve that, then I think we'll be ready to take the next step and meet some of our galactic neighbors. So, alien listeners, give us a few years and then stop by and say howdy. I'll keep the beer cold for y'all.
