Profile: Aalborg University Esbjerg Computer Science Department

Personal background
Aalborg University Esbjerg (AUE) is located on the west coast of Jutland in Denmark. The campus was integrated into the Aalborg University system just a few years ago, but has since experienced explosive growth, especially in the Computer Science Department.

The city of Esbjerg is Denmark's fifth largest, with a population of c. 80,000. Esbjerg is home to a number of cultural and sporting events every year, and is located only 20 minutes away from the island of Fanoe, a popular vacation destination. Esbjerg features excellent air, rail, bus and auto connections with the rest of Scandinavia and Europe.

The Computer Science Department offers all levels of degrees in a number of curricula, including computer science, computer engineering, and software engineering. The faculty is home to a number of first-class international researchers, with interests in a number of areas, including digital libraries, structural computing, computer supported collaborative work, fuzzy logic and data mining.

A number of study and employment opportunities are open at AUE - mail software@cs.aue.auc.dk for more information.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
AUE supports the SETI@home project by running the signal analysis tool on many of its faculty and student workstations. Extraterrestrial life almost certainly exists. Some small percentage of this life may be beaming signals to us - why not look for these?

At the AUE Computer Science Department, we also look at the SETI@home project from a different, less philosophical light. The entire SETI@home apparatus is an excellent example of massively distributed processing, and of the effects of the computer on community building. We feel there are interesting questions that can be asked about the project itself, independent of its goals. We encourage our students to look at the SETI@home project in this light as well.
