Profile: Ian Kershaw

Personal background
Following three years at Hull University (England) I spent two years teaching outdoor pursuits before starting my climb up the corporate ladder. After various Senior Management positions and Directorships I am now a consultant with Expense Reduction Analysts helping companies to reduce their overheads by focusing on their non strategic expenditure. In my spare time I do a bit of web design and go walking and sailing (but not at the same time!) with the occasional MENSA meeting thrown in for good luck. I have always had a passing interest in heavenly bodies and often wondered what else is out there.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Who know's if there IS life out there - no harm in having a good look though eh? If we found some sort of signal that there was something out there, chances are that it would be so far away that we wouldn't be able to do anything about it and so there would be no benefits or dangers either way. The time it would take to swap signals would be too great and the possibilty of sending manned craft there would be out of the question. So I think if we did find proof positive - we'd be a bit stuck for the next move, but I guess that's a bridge to be considered crossing by others. For me, you can use my spare PC power anytime, curiosity is a wonderful human trait.
