Personal background
I'm a 25-year-old from Indianapolis. I have a BA in Physics from DePauw U. in Greencastle, IN, and a MS in Physics from Ball State U. in Muncie, IN. My main area of interest is observational astronomy. For my master's thesis, I studied red dwarf stars. In 2001 I also did some research at Michigan State U. on double-mode RR Lyrae variables. I am greatly interested in celestial mechanics and solar/extrasolar planetary systems. As of now (2005) I am still searching for a research job in a related area.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Given that there is such a HUGE number of stars in the universe, it is very likely that there is extraterrestrial life. It is, however, less likely that there is intelligent, technologically active, and nearby extraterrestrial life. Under the limits of our present technology, the SETI program is designed to find this small segment of the extraterrestral population if it exists. While it may not be the main priority of earth's population to find these beings, the interest and support of interested individuals (including all of us that run SETI@home) will continuously fuel the increase in coverage and efficiency of the search.
