Personal background
I was born in 1972 in Michigan. Grew up there. I lived in Taiwan between 1995 and 1999 - that is when I first started with SETI@Home, unfortunately I have had to change accounts twice since then. I now live in Eastern Washington. I am interested in the use of technology to better our lives and am most interested in computer networking. I consider myself an environmentalist and a minimalist except when it comes to technology. I am not sure how to explain that in these few words. I have a family, like bicycling and volleyball, but like many others that have families find it very difficult to find time for my hobbies - other than tech stuff of course. Besides using SETI on my computers (3 of them) I am also interested in the weather simulator and when it comes out I will probably try that as well. ----

I am a SciFi and Fantasy fan. I liked Contact, all the Star Wars and Star Trek films. I don't mean to disappoint anyone, but I never really got into the original Star Trek TV shows. I did watch Star Trek Voyager almost religiously, however, and the occasional next generation as well. I guess the timing was just better.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I would agree that it is very likely extraterrestrial life exists. When and how we discover it I do not know, I just hope it is a meeting between two civilized societies. Potential benefits are cooperating and sharing in order to achieve what we would not have been able to achieve without it. Potential dangers include the further exploitation of our race or depending on the circumstances of the meeting maybe the exploitation of the alien race. Again, hopefully both races will be civilized. ----

2. We most certainly ought to constantly transmit beacons for others to find, if nothing else a purposeful transmission would at least help to counterbalance some of the crap that comes from our radio and television stations. I think we should send something friendly and meaningful, beyond that I don't know. Maybe something similar to what went out on voyager I and II. In addition the last known trojectories of the Pioneers and Voyagers could be sent. A final maybe borrowing from an idea in "contact". The beacon could contain designs to build something, some kind of simple tool or appliance even. Kind of like a gift. I think a toaster would be good. ----

3. I find it reassuring to know no matter how much I procrastinate or how little I do over a weekend as long as I have SETI running on my computer(s) in a way I am still being productive. In addition to that I think helping in the process to find extraterrestrial life is just plain awesome and I am grateful to the guys who created this program for giving people a chance to help. I think it is totally ingenious. ----

Suggestions - The ability to send in a result and download a new packet seperately would be great. Being able to save the analyzed results and transfer them to another computer in the case that not all computers had internet access would be another good idea.
