Profile: Graham Charles

Personal background
I’m a 47 year-old with a flair for the artistic! Well, I like to tell myself that, anyway! I’ve lived in Devon in the South West of England for the past 28 years, although I was born a Scot and I’m still proud of that fact.

I’ve been working for a global IT support company for the last 6 years and I’m feeling that it’s about time to change. I suppose that I specialise in the administration of medium and high-end UNIX or VMS servers, but the job is being eroded with the ‘centralisation’ idea and it’s taking the fun out of it. Back to training or management, I guess!

I would like to think I’m versatile enough to get out there and improve life some more, but in our country, ‘over 40’ seems to mean ‘over-the-hill’ to a lot of companies. Still, I AM versatile and think that I still have a lot to offer…lets hope I can convince others of that fact!

Boy, would I love to be the one who’s PC analysed the first confirmed signal!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think the possibilities of life existing elsewhere in the Universe (with the uppercase ‘U’), is high and the idea we would be alone is perhaps a little ludicrous. But whether we, as a race, could recognise a signal sent as ‘intelligent’ would, for me, be debatable. And would the race receiving our signals, identify them as ‘intelligent’? If we assume a race further advanced than ourselves, we only have to look at our own advancements over the last millennium, to see the problems. Could someone who was only aware of ‘jungle drum communication’, really be expected to recognise messages transmitted by laser, for example? Would we really recognise a transmission if we heard it, or would we assume we’d found another pulsar and move on to the next part of the grid?

I think the possible benefits outweigh the possible dangers, but that we should always be aware of the type of animal that WE are. We have a tendency to destroy what we don’t understand or, at the very least, dismiss it. I think, perhaps, that we NEED to find other life, but it would still concern me how many people feel that it should be in OUR image. A little bit like thinking everyone should speak English, just because I do?

It's good to feel useful and I hope more get in the habit!
